Swish Blog Podcast Mix, Episode #25

May 16, 2006

This Podcast is admittedly monthly now - and that's as frequently as i can do it - i'm just far too lazy for more updates. Far. Too. Lazy.

Shoe Girl and I are going on holiday! This Friday! Yay for foreign food (which is surely the best thing about any holiday abroad?)!

The following 15 songs are f**king great.

Swish Blog Podcast Mix, Episode #24

April 11, 2006

for no reason except cutenessThis podcast has been long in the making, unfortunately I've just been too busy playing Football Manager and getting drunk and being ill to bother with one. Luckily though, this means that it's a real stormer as only the really good sht from the past month has made the cut.

Ok, now for a quick round up: If you haven't heard of Naked Babes yet where have you been? A collaboration between over-productive fidgety-types Tom Vek, Dev from Test Icicles and Ferry and Chris from Semi-Finalists; they make lovely noises.

Adam Kesher were the lead track on the last podcast and I couldn't help putting another track in this one. They're French, but good.

Hot Club De Paris are from Liverpool, which instantly makes them worth a listen (NB: when did The Zutons get so good?), but they're doing loads of dates in London over the next month or so; it's a must see.

Polytechnic are another band from where I like to call 'not-London' (this time from Manchester) who deserve special attention, especially as they manage to sound awesome despite one of their number having long hair and a beard.

NEW ACTION PLAN STUFF! (Jesus Christ it's good)

NEW STUFF FROM THE ROCKS! (Demo version of their next single! Woot!)

Swish Blog Podcast Mix, Episode #23

March 15, 2006

Adam Kesher are two brothers from Bordeaux - that's in France – who, like all the best French musical exports of the past 10 years, sound about as French as Yorkshire puddings. Their debut EP 'Where's My Place' (which this track is taken from) is out on April 24th; they're also playing some dates in London, tonight (15th March) at Plan B, Friday (17th) at the Bull & Gate and Monday (20th) at the Hope & Anchor. Worth a look I reckon.

'GoodBook' by MIT is apparently their first English language song, although I can't understand a bloody word of it.

Xerox Teens and The Horrors are featured in this week's NME, which must be nice for them.

Bertel Haugen is a genius.

I put 'Save Ginny Weasly' by Harry and the Potters at the end of this mix firstly because it's quite an old song, and it's possible that most of you would have already heard of them; and secondly because if you've never read a Harry Potter book you'll have no idea, and probably wont care, what it's about.

Ivor Cutler r.i.p.

Swish Blog Podcast Mix, Episode #22

March 09, 2006

As a change to the regular order of things (i.e. about every three weeks I update my 'weekly' Podcast mix with 15 new songs) this week sees the first of The Swish Blog's guest Podcast episodes.

The first episode of what will hopefully be a short series of guest mixes is provided by the boys from The Horror Podcast, which if you haven't heard is a totally essential slab of horror film ramblings from two South-West London swells. Fittingly, in this special mix the boys - otherwise known as Chad & Dave - take us through the best scary music from films, TV and beyond, interspersed with their trademark 'hilarious' banter.

More spazzing

February 20, 2006

As I alluded to earlier, during the F-up I lost all of my audio files and my podcast xml feed, which was a bit of a downer as I'd just updated it so you could download almost all of my previous 20 Podcasts. Luckily I had a backup of the audio files, and they are now back on the server available to download: go mad. Unfortunately I didn't have a back up of the Podcast xml feed, so - although there is a limited version up live on the server now - that will take a little longer to restore (the time it takes me to rewrite the whole thing in fact)..

In the meantime, download any of my podcast episodes directly from here. Woop.

Swish Blog Podcast Mix, Episode #20

February 10, 2006

It's been an exceedingly long time since I last did a Podcast wotsit for your eager ears, dear reader. For that, I apologise. However I have complete faith that this mix will make up for any bad feeling owing to my delayed absence, because, in all honesty it's friggin' boss.

And in case you were wondering, Future and the Boy is Eddie Argos from Art Brut; it seems he was having a laugh in the studio with fellow Art-Gobliner Nicky Biscuit. Add Them.

Swish Blog Artists of the Year Playlist Mix

December 17, 2005

So here it is my one and only piece of end-of-year listing. Each of the tracks on the playlist mix which you can download below has featured on a previous instalment of The Swish Blog's mixes this year; they are my favourite tracks of the year by, in my opinion, the year's best artists.

Not too complicated then: download it below by right-clicking and saving-as the appropriate link, plug in your headphones, and enjoy 'The Swish Blog End of Year Megamix', as I'm calling it in my own head.

The Swish Blog End Of Year Megamix
High Quality (160kbps) 55MB | Low Quality (64kbps) 22MB
(Please right click and save-as)

Scene Damage - Test Icicles {00.00}
Band of the year in my opinion, although if you've ever read this blog before you'd already know that. Scene Damage seems to have disappeared from their live sets and to my dismay was absent from the album, but about this time last year it was the track which helped me realise they were something special...

She's Not Leaving - The Research {3:30}
The guy wears a silly hat with badges on it, one of the girls is fat and the other is skinny.

All In My Head - Good Shoes {5:14}
Good Shoes are my favourite band that I've never seen live (although I'm discounting Girls Aloud because although I’ve never been to one of their concerts I have seen them at the Disney Kids Awards and Pollwinners Party), but it doesn't matter cos I put my very own Good Shoes concerts on every morning in the shower – I do all the hits: Morden, Never Meant To Hurt You, Small Town Girl and this one – and I reckon I'm as good as they are, if not better.

Madame Geneva - Greyhound Green {7.22}
Greyhound Green have a link entitled 'Other Stuff' on their website, which if clicked transports you into a magical world where goblins and elves rule.

London Sky Tonight - The Bridge Gang {9.54}
Oof. Everybody is bigging these up for next year, mainly off the back of this song, which I suppose took on extra meaning a last week when that big black oil cloud came overhead.

Downing Street Kindling - Larrikin Love {12.12}
I'm personally a bit embarrassed about how much I love Larrikin Love, especially after I publicly wrote on this blog at the beginning of March that they were bloody awful. I was wrong.

From The Ritz To The Rubble - Arctic Monkeys {14.52}
Music story of the year without a doubt, let’s just hope the backlash isn’t too strong because they seem to deserve all the praise they are receiving.

Wait (The Whisper Song) - Ying Yang Twins {18.05}
This is the only song by the Ying Yang Twins that I've ever heard but it’s been in my head all year, usually when I have my trousers around my ankles.

Pioneers - Mystery Jets {21.06}
At the start of the year Bloc Party finally fulfilled their potential which everybody has been harking on about for the past 3 years, half way through the year Mystery Jets covered Pioneers for some b-side or other, now Mystery Jets have the excitement and potential, and all the harking.

First And Foremost - Action Plan {24.48}
I still haven't decided whether Action Plan are a quiet band, or a noisy band. Can someone tell me please?

After The Fact - Jeremy Warmsley {28.13}
Not only responsible for bringing braces back into fashion, Jeremy also wrote Nizlopi's Christmas-#1-contender The JCB Song.

The Hypnotist's Son - Emmy The Great {31.00}
Emmy once sat on a sofa with no cushions. It hurt.

Loop Duplicate My Heart - Suburban Kids With Biblical Names {36.02}
This song was on a playlist mix in October where I accidentally called it Spår 02, when in fact it's called Loop Duplicate My Heart. I don't know how I did that.

Nine - ¡Forward, Russia! {39.07}
Was this song released this year? It should have been. It’s about Hemingway and the Nile or something.

Too Close For Comfort - McFly {42.52}
McFly win every accolade that I haven't already distributed to the other 14 artists. And they like man-sex with each other.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 23-11-05

November 23, 2005

Here is this week's Playlist Mix, I hope you enjoy it, although I suppose if you'd payed any attention the previous post you'll already have this mix via the MAGIC of Podcasting, what fun.

586 are a band of boys and girls who obviously like mid-'90s twee (brit)pop and Shoreditch. They have Girls Aloud in their 'Top 8' on MySpace and are therefore 'ace'.

'Death Cola Music' by Tiger Force is taken from their forthcoming split 10"/CD with Silent Front. They each have two songs and not one song on the whole release is sub-standard - you can buy it from their MySpace via PayPal, how very internetty of them.

Son Of Dork are James Bourne from Busted's new band. 'Murdered In The Mosh' is one of two songs on the album co-written by James with Avril's chums The Matrix. James wrote the rest himself, but that's just because he's awesome.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 02-11-05

November 02, 2005

This week there will be two Swish Blog Playlist Mixes. One will celebrate the end of the warmer months of the year, the other welcoming the onset of the colder ones.

The end of October and start of November seems to be a tipping point between the autumnal optimism ("it's still summer! It's still summer! I can wear shorts if I like!"), and the hibernation mentality of winter ("I can't believe it's dark when I leave work! How shit is that!").

First: The Swish Blog 'Oh my god I wish it was still summer' Mix

On a bright October afternoon you're talking a walk on Wimbledon Common, the sun is low in the sky but it's still warm enough for you to only be wearing a t-shirt with your green cardigan over the top. You shelter your eyes from the light as you walk towards a clump of sliver birch trees; their leaves - although still green - have started to senesce and turn a coppery colour around the edges. The grass brushing against your legs has certainly started to die and the long yellow stems are bent and glistening with dew.
Although you can see steam come from you mouth as you exhale, you still wonder if you should take your cardigan off.
You wish you were on the Costa Del Sol.

My first sober moment for a while...

October 11, 2005

I had intended to write small summaries of some of the tracks in last Friday's playlist mix, but completely ran out of time as I was late for an awards ceremony – about which, there is more on my Flickr – so for my sins (and my seemingly eternal hangover) I'll add them in now.

Firstly, Jeremy Warmlsley’s track After The Fact is taken from his soon-to-be-released EP '5 Interesting Lies' which is released on Transgressive on the 7th of November. Incidentally, any Londoners of a J_Wo persuasion should go to his EP launch party tomorrow night at the Camden Barfly – he's supported by Emmy The Great and Roland Shanks so it should be awesome – get there early!

I've been told I talk about Test Icicles way too much on here, so I'll keep this short: What's Michelle Like? was on the boy's first demo last September, but this is a rerecorded version which is the secret track on their new album 'For Screening Purposes Only' out 31st October.

Beauty Scars by Action Plan is the b-side to their new single 'Stendhal' out on Young and Lost Records at some point in the near future. This track has featured on a Swish Mix before, but this rerecorded version sounds a lot better and also seems to convey a lot more heart.

Now if you haven't downloaded the thing yet, do it now – you have no excuse (unless you're on a dial-up connection, or hate me).

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 07-10-05

October 07, 2005

I first tried to do this Swish Mix last Wednesday, but at the song choosing stage I realised all I had listened to in the past week was the new McFly and Test Icicles albums; so I shelved a new mix until today - giving myself enough time to do some serious listening (whilst of course still getting enough McFly and Test Icicles into my system... seriously, I'm obsessed).

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 27-09-05

September 27, 2005

I have it on good authority that 50 Cent and some of G Unit recently went into a studio in Wigan to do some recording; no really, I'm serious. I have it on good authority that the first track in this week's Swish Mix, Emotional, is one of the tracks recorded by 'Fiddy' in said Wigan studio. Certainly the lyrics seem fresh - mentioning the wide-eyed enthusiasm of groupies from Glasgow - he really should lose that 'lollipop' metaphor though.

You should also make sure you listen to Jeremy Warmsley's A Matter Of Principle; A London boy who seems to have perfectly combined American emotional indie and eccentric British electronica. He's just been signed by trend-setting label Transgressive Records, who will be releasing his forthcoming EP '5 Interesting Lies' in November.

It's been brought to my attention that it's quite easy to lose your place in my mixes, and have no clue which song is which. So, to aid you, I have included a handy time key on each track so you should never lose your place again. I'm nice like that.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 13-09-05

September 13, 2005

Last night I went to an Artrocker night at The Garage and watched Twisted Charm (Nathan's backcombed hair is getting out of control), Black Wire (Dan gets prettier every day... Si is obviously starting to think that he's in Vincent Vincent & The Villains) and Test Icicles (who, whilst playing Boa vs. Python exclaimed "anyone who bought this single is a retard!"); it was amazing...

The Test Icicles album is out soon, and I was lucky enough to get a 5-track sampler thingy of which the first track in this week's mix, Pull The Lever, is from.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 06-09-05

September 06, 2005

It has been a month since my last Swish Mix. Call it blogger-apathy, laziness or whatever you will, the truth is that I've had a pretty difficult couple of weeks, as well as being pretty hectic. Reading Festival, parties at my parents house (my aunty got knocked up), moving around with a heavy bag of clothes; Swish-Mixing was the last thing on my mind.

Now I'm back, and I'm back for good.

We're coming to the end of festival season here in blighty and I had planned my personal finale to be this weekend's Bestival, lovingly made by Radio 1's Rob Da Bank's. Stupid name, great line-up. However it looks like I may have to forfeit a fun-filled-Isle-of-Wight-weekend in favour of having money to spend on food for the next month. I may give away / sell my tickets on here in the next day or so, so keep checking back!

Coming up we've got Test-Icicles and Black Wire at an Artrocker night at the Garage, not to mention Artrocker's first foray into hip-hopping with Mike-Skinner's buddies The Mitchell Brothers and Why Lout?, again at The Garage. Next week we have 'Battle of the Art Brut Franchises', which I'm sure will be incredible, if a little pretentious.

Anyway, here's the new mix. It's pretty good although the sound is a bit fucked up on the lower quality version so I wouldn't bother with it if I were you.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 22-07-05

July 22, 2005

With all the kafuffle that's going on in London (and of course Harry Potter reading to be done) I haven't really been in the mood for mix-making, but last night I bashed one out for you guys simply because so much good music had recently come into my possession.

Highlights:
Blame It On The Trains - Art Brut //
Recorded for a Radio 1 session (Hu Stevens I think) it's a new Art Brut song which I think is going to be a b-side on the next single.
Downing Street Kindling - Larrikin Love //
Taken from their new demo 'The Bunker Sessions' which were recorded earlier this month, they get ten times better with everything they do.
Summer Song - Scratch Card Junkie //
The very best punk pop, recorded in their school studio.
Lucid Fairytale - Napalm Death //
Recorded for a Radio 1 John Peel Session in September 1987, awesome. (via The Perfumed Garden)

The Swish Blog, Weekly Playlist Mix, 22-07-05

3. Dancing On The Kitchen Floor - Milburn
4. Maintain The Focus - Test-Icicles
5. London's Dead - The March Hares
6. Kloy Gyn - Efterklang
7. Unseen Sights - Alias
8. Whitewash Is Brainwash - Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.
9. Keep It Away - Manic Cough
10. Maybe You Can Owe Me - Architecture In Helsinki
11. Tell Me What You Want (Session) - The Pipettes
12. Skeleton Jar - Youth Group
13. Summer Song (Demo) - Scratch Card Junkie
14. Ten Pence Piece - Bullet Union
15. Lucid Fairytale (Session) - Napalm Death

The sound quality is a little poor on a few of the tracks - unfortunately this is especially noticeable in the sessions and demos I've highlighted above - however they are still worth your listening time; I would not have put them in if they were not.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 30-06-05

June 30, 2005

Glastonbury and a relatively busy time at work have put these mixes on the back burner somewhat. Now they return, and will hopefully become a weekly occurrence once again. There's been a great response to them so far, and long may it continue - the way I see it a 15 track mix is just another way to sample music - I want this to be a two way recommendation service in the same way a normal music-blog works.

Most of the tracks on this weeks mix are the pick of the best music I've picked up in the past three weeks, some you may know, some you may not.
I'd particularly recommend Open Book by The Rakes, from their new album Capture/Release, London Beach / North Atlantic Turbine by Lovers Of Today - who seem to be a messy collection of musicians affiliated with New Cross' Angular Recording Corporation - like a jitter-pop British Sea Power, Music To Fuck Sluts To by Video Club who are yet another band in the Art Brut-network and have apparently been in the studio recently with Keith TOTP of Art Goblins.

I'd also recommend Black History Month by Death From Above 1979 that has been given the once over by Sammy Danger (of Test-Icicles fame); let's just say that only Test-Icicles style madness could make that song any better and, personally, I think he has.

Finally the CocoRosie track is heart-stoppingly beautiful and features that Antony and the Johnsons bloke/bird.

The Swish Blog, Weekly Playlist Mix, 30/06/05
High Quality 160kbps (71MB) | Low Quality 64kbps (24MB)
(Please right click and save-as)

1. Iggy - Acoustic Ladyland
2. Space Invaders - Arctic Monkeys
3. Sendai - Love Ends Disaster
4. Somewhere - The Subways
5. Open Book - The Rakes
6. Back History Month (Sammy Danger Remix) - Death From Above 1979
7. The Wives Of Artie Shaw - Kinski
8. Music To Fuck Sluts To - Video Club
9. London Beach / North Atlantic Turbine - Lovers Of Today
10. Dangerzone - Clor
11. Corned Beef - No Pets
12. Ditshe Tshiekutala - Konono Number 1
13. Beautiful Boyz - CocoRosie
14. Cracked Machine - Pro Forma
15. Micheal Jackson Knows God - Erol Alkan

Oh yeah, and if any of you get to the end of the mix - yes, I know - the Erol Alkan track is RUBBISH, completely unfinished. I only realised this after i'd mixed it in. Ho hum.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 06-06-05

June 06, 2005

I'm very pleased with this week's mix. Even though the actual song segways aren't as well executed as some of my previous mixes (let's be honest, the 5th of May mix was peerless) the songs complement, blend and course so well that your attention is never lost; and there are some real crackers on there too.

The first song 'Relax' is yet another song off the new Scout Niblett album - which, like 'The New Fellas' by The Cribs is proving to be a top source of great songs - and it sets the stall. I've recently moved house, which I can assure you is a pain in the arse, consequently with this mix I had hoped to create a selection of songs which would help me relax and settle my nerves.

It gets really noisy in the middle of this with the Erase Errata remix, Diplo, Out Hud and The Juan MacLean which I think is super; and then gets even better with (apparently the next single from) The Rakes - a song which seems to sum up my life in one large gulp (and I'm sure does pretty well with most of yours as well) - closely followed by Rudiments by Milburn, a song recommended by the lovely Heather.

The Swish Blog, Weekly Playlist Mix, 06/06/05
High Quality 160kbps (54MB) | Low Quality 64kbps (22MB)
(Please right click and save-as)

1. Relax - Scout Niblett
2. Bisounours - CocoRosie
3. Stay Comfortable - Redjetson
4. Good Stuff - Clor
5. Monkeys In Space - Sexton Ming & Billy Childish
6. Retreat, The Most Familiar, Extensive, I Bet (Kid606 Remix) - Erase Errata
7. Haiti On Blast - Diplo
8. Tito's Way - The Juan MacLean
9. One Life To Leave - Out Hud
10. Talk Talk Talk Talk - Love Is All
11. Sin - C-Jags
12. Pub, Club, Sleep. Work, Work, Work (Session) - The Rakes
13. Don't Give Up - The Noisettes
14. Rudiments - Milburn
15. Not Everyone - Nine Black Alps

And finally, keep an ear out for a couple of appearences by the scariest TV character so far this year...

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 19-05-05

May 19, 2005

In parts this week's mix looks a bit like a setlist from some no-name indie disco, and for good reason: indie discos rule. There is no need for bullshit and pretense when 'Hey Scenesters' is blasting out across a dancefloor of sweaty teenagers screaming "you are all in trouble now, someones gonna cop it now" at each other – like hooligans in a riot, faceless and blameless – hence The Cribs are perfect to get it off to a start. You should all be fairly well familiar with many of the other bands on here too, most are big bands (and big business) now, and why shouldn't they be? This is pop, we are pop; our generation has managed something which hasn't happened since punk – we've taken back the music industry – the big labels are playing catch-up, and I say let them try, there's plenty of time to sell out once you've changed the world.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 12-05-05

May 12, 2005

This week has been one of highs and lows. Firstly the low of finding out Art Brut had missed the Top 40 singles chart by one place (and allegedly two copies!), which was (very) closely followed with sheer elation after finding that Liverpool had lost to Arsenal, giving Everton the fourth Champions League spot. Later on the high of meeting Amy Winehouse, and she was a real charmer too – bonus! In midweek came the low of watching Arsenal joke around with Everton; and finally was the high of having tomorrow off work (there are awards to be won and free wine to be drunk)!

So, hoping to end the week on a high I have made this mix – and bequest it to you – I hope it gives 7-0 style highs to all you Arsenal fans out there.
Making it was a tad labourious – I have a real job too after all – but I would especially recommend The Cribs track ‘Haunted’ at the end which is taken from their soon to be released / soon to be hailed-a-classic album; you should also check out Magazine’s ’The Light Pours Out Of Me’ which was recorded for a John Peel session in 1978.

The Swish Blog, Weekly Playlist Mix, 12/05/05
High Quality 160kbps (59MB) | Low Quality 64kbps (23MB)

Tracklisting:
1. Saiko Saiko San – Polysics
2. Wax My Anus – Chicks On Speed
3. What’d I Say – Ray Charles
4. In This Chair – Whiskeycats
5. Guns Of Brixton – Nouvelle Vague
6. Stand Down – Art Brut
7. Love Your Shoes – Furniture
8. Scene Damage – Test-Icicles
9. Little Girl (MasterKraft edit) – Death From Above 1979
10. Eight - ¡Forward Russia!

12. Sweet Defeat – The Flesh
13. Poor Innocent Boys (demo) – Cazals
14. The Light Pours Out Of Me (session) – Magazine
15. Haunted – The Cribs

Edit:
It seems I rushed this a bit and consequently forgot to change the ID3 tags and add the album art (which contains the tracklisting), if you'd like to add the tracklist yourself it's available here.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 05-05-05

May 05, 2005

My life has been very uninteresting recently, well not too bad for me personally, but far too boring for me to write about on here; hence the lack of entries. I have, however, been able to make a new mix tape for this week which is available to download below (please right click and save as and don’t stream it kills my bandwidth allocation).

I’ve also recruited a new writer, Helen from Popstar Feets is going to be contributing gig reviews and the like to this site (mainly so I can put my feet up), so expect a post from her in the next couple of days.

Ok here’s the mix for you all, again my week has been rather barren musically speaking so most of the tracks were filched and ripped from other musicblogs and artist websites, apologies if you’ve heard or downloaded any of the tracks recently. I’d also like to apologise that there are only 14 tracks – I’m very tired – I really didn’t realise until far too late in the process.
Enjoy.

High Quality 160kbps (52MB) | Low Quality 64kbps (21MB)

13. Cassette - The Glimmers
14. Black Cotton Sweater - Ethan Lipton

As usual if you would like any information on any of the artists featured don't hesitate to contact me and I’ll see what I can do. However I am now unable to take requests for individual mp3s of each track, it was taking far too much of my time.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 27-04-05

April 27, 2005

The playlist mixes are back! I know I’m far more excited about these things than you are, but I’m going to still keep making them, especially after the response to the last two was so good (you blew my bloody bandwidth!)

I think this new one has a nice flow to it, starting very quiet, becoming a lot more guitary-and-indie, and then turning into a big shake-your-booty fest at the end. Make sure you check out the Why Lout? remake of Emily Kane by Art Brut (which I think you can still download from the Artrocker site), it's brilliant.

The Swish Blog, Weekly Playlist Mix, 27/04/05
High Quality 160kbps (56MB) | Low Quality 64kbps (22MB)

Tracklisting:
1. Back In Time - Au Revoir Simone

4. Les Fleur - Minnie Riperton

6. Cuts Across The Land - The Duke Spirit
7. Billy - Dustin's Bar Mitzvah
8. What She Says - Drivin' South
9. Train Track - Wet Dog

12. Got It Twisted Sister - Dopplebanger

14. Ulcer Rap - Nigga Bullshit
15. Emily Kane - Why Lout?

If you download the mix and enjoy it, hate it, find it useful or think it's a big waste of my time, please don't hesitate to comment.

New Weekly Playlist Mix

Here's a new swish-mix for you downloading pleasure - I know it seems too soon (considering the last one went up on Sunday night) but the actual list of songs for that mix has been available on my weekly playlist blog for over a week.

Please comment if you find it useful, or think it's a waste of my time.
