hotttt...

November 29, 2005

It’s quite ridiculous actually that I haven’t mentioned this earlier, but I recently took part in a survey of British music bloggers (along with fellow 'experts' from Said The Gramophone, Popjustice, 20 Jazz Funk Greats and Popstar Feets amongst others) to determine the 'The 47 hottest artists in the UK this year', ran by über-music blogger Mike Smith at Take Your Medicine.

The top ten contains some quite surprising choices, and some great ones too; all-in-all making a rather exciting list, but us Brits always have to do things differently, don’t we.

Read it now to find out which artists have claimed this year as their own, and look a bit further down the list to find out which bands are likely to lay claim to 2006. WE KNOW ALL.

November 28, 2005

Tonight Swish Blog-favourites Action Plan launch their debut single 'Stendhal'/'Beauty Scars' (released on Young & Lost Records no less) at Push Bar in Soho (in fact it's at, unsurprisingly, the Young & Lost Club).

If you're interested in going to the gig here are the details:
ACTION PLAN SINGLE LAUNCH
THE PUSH BAR, DEAN STREET, W1
DOORS 8pm-1am, FREE ENTRY
LIVE SETS FROM ACTION PLAN, THE B PLAN & FEAR OF FLYING
DJ SETS FROM RAZORLIGHT, JET, COLIN DIS, GRANDAD & THE PYHRRA GIRLS.
We have been told to tell everyone to get there for when doors open to
ensure entry as it looks like it's gonna be busy.

You should, of course, also consider buying the single because it is ace (both tracks having featured on Swish Blog Playlist Mixes in the past). If this interests you then I have been informed that you can buy the single from: Pure Groove, Rough Trade (both London), Jumbo Records (Leeds), Vinyl Junkie, Escalotour Records (Japan) and www.onthefringe.co.uk

An invitation to you!

November 24, 2005

Late notice I know, but tomorrow night (25th November) in Corsica Studios, Elephant & Castle, fellow blogger (and the rest) Helen Lawrence from Popstar Feets will be exhibiting her pedial-concerned photography at a late night party, with bands!

The more people that come down to see her work the more she gets paid, which, in turn, directly affects the quality of Christmas presents I will be receiving this year so I urge you all to cancel whatever else you’re doing and come down.

Esoterica, Junkbox and The Indelicates will be plying their musical wares on the stage, and double spirits and mixers are only £3.50.

It promises to be a really fun night, so if you’re interested in coming please send me an email and I'll put you on the cheap list for £3 entry.

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 23-11-05

November 23, 2005

Here is this week's Playlist Mix, I hope you enjoy it, although I suppose if you'd payed any attention the previous post you'll already have this mix via the MAGIC of Podcasting, what fun.

586 are a band of boys and girls who obviously like mid-'90s twee (brit)pop and Shoreditch. They have Girls Aloud in their 'Top 8' on MySpace and are therefore 'ace'.

'Death Cola Music' by Tiger Force is taken from their forthcoming split 10"/CD with Silent Front. They each have two songs and not one song on the whole release is sub-standard - you can buy it from their MySpace via PayPal, how very internetty of them.

Son Of Dork are James Bourne from Busted's new band. 'Murdered In The Mosh' is one of two songs on the album co-written by James with Avril's chums The Matrix. James wrote the rest himself, but that's just because he's awesome.

Podcasting across the universe...

It has occurred to me that despite the Podcast of my (almost) weekly playlist mixes being available for the past seven months, many of you may not have subscribed because the link to subscribe has been hidden down at the bottom of the right sidebar for all that time.
So, now that Podcasts seem to be literally TAKING OVER THE WORLD, with everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Harry Potter getting in on the act I thought I'd flag up my feed to you all.

Firstly, a small introduction to Podcasts for any surviving luddites out there. What you must first realise is that podcasts aren't exclusively for iPods, The Swish Blog Podcast is an mp3 file that can be played on any compatible personal digital audio player, or media player on your computer (such as Windows Media Player or iTunes).
The point of a Podcast is that you get the media file automatically delivered to your computer each time a new one is available. To do this you must 'subscribe' to the Podcast. To do this you will need Podcast software, the three I would recommend are iTunes, Juice (formerly iPodder) and Odeo, once you have the software all you have to do is copy the Podcast URL into the software and click 'subscribe'.

Fame at last!

November 22, 2005

Thanks to everyone who pointed out The Swish Blog's first broadsheet mention in the Observer Review's letter page this Sunday. Whoever our Mr John Doe is I'm sure Tom from Indie MP3, Mike from Take Your Medicine and myself are very grateful for their kind comments about our English language skills.

Here's the full transcript:
"Your article on music blogs ('Geek translations', 13 November) was guilty of stereotyping bloggers, many of whom write relatively sensible reviews. Inventing the term 'Bloglish' and inviting a language expert to analyse how bloggers make up words created an extremely negative stereotype: 'Blogs are unapproachable'. In fact, many blogs are exciting, free and easy to read. I recommend your writer looks at www.abougu.co.uk/swishblog, www.indie-mp3.co.uk/blog/blog.htm, and takeyourmedicinemp3.blogspot.com."

If anyone knows who the gracious correspondent might be, or still has a copy of the magazine knocking around please get in touch.

This is a gig diary...

November 17, 2005

Although I've been holding back on 'going out' a lot recently (in order to save money for Christmas; giving is the new receiving don't you know) the past 4 weeks has seen me dragged out to quite a few that haven't been reported on this here blog. Now considering that the first line of the 'ABOUT THE SWISH BLOG' bit on the right is "This is a gig diary.." this isn't good enough. However in order to save my (very precious) time I'll report on the gigs in an arbitrary 1 to 10 rating system with pictures, don't say I never do anything for you.

Total losers

November 09, 2005

This conversation originally started between Shoe Girl, my little brother (via txt) and myself at the McFly concert I went to at Wembley a while back. They played the Son Of Dork video on the big screen before McFly came on (oh, the volume of the screams still haunts me) and it was immediately obvious that it was a blatant rip-off of the New Found Glory video for 'Dressed To Kill'. So blatant in fact, that James is actually wearing a NFG t-shirt in this 'remake'. Anyway, I think we should let bygones be bygones because Son Of Dork will probably turn out to be pretty awesome (although my opinions on this particular song aren't exactly constructive).

Swish Blog Playlist Mix 02-11-05

November 02, 2005

This week there will be two Swish Blog Playlist Mixes. One will celebrate the end of the warmer months of the year, the other welcoming the onset of the colder ones.

The end of October and start of November seems to be a tipping point between the autumnal optimism ("it's still summer! It's still summer! I can wear shorts if I like!"), and the hibernation mentality of winter ("I can't believe it's dark when I leave work! How shit is that!").

First: The Swish Blog 'Oh my god I wish it was still summer' Mix

On a bright October afternoon you're talking a walk on Wimbledon Common, the sun is low in the sky but it's still warm enough for you to only be wearing a t-shirt with your green cardigan over the top. You shelter your eyes from the light as you walk towards a clump of sliver birch trees; their leaves - although still green - have started to senesce and turn a coppery colour around the edges. The grass brushing against your legs has certainly started to die and the long yellow stems are bent and glistening with dew.
Although you can see steam come from you mouth as you exhale, you still wonder if you should take your cardigan off.
You wish you were on the Costa Del Sol.
